Yoga?
Why yoga, when there are so many types of therapy and service a psychologist could provide?
While working with students in the school setting, I utilized several intervention programs to teach self-regulation through mindfulness. The students learned about their brains, their breath, and the connection between the two. They practiced ways to refocus their attention to improve their classroom behavior and social relationships.
Research regarding yoga with kids shows that it can improve self-esteem, reduce perceived stress, and increase focus - all of which are correlated with improved school performance (Eggleston, 2015). Additionally, yoga is beginning to be incorporated into therapies for children with conditions such as ADD/ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and autism spectrum disorder, allowing kids to learn coping skills for the stimulation they receive from the world around them. For everyone, it can improve strength, endurance, coordination, and balance.
BMH Wellness began with the idea of Mindful Moving Kids - a place where children can learn and practice breathing techniques, mindfulness, and social skills through the physical practice of yoga. Why yoga? Because it can stimulate the mind-body connection. Because it can reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression. Because it can improve focus. Because it can instill resilience. Because it can empower and increase confidence. Because it is fun. And we could all benefit from those outcomes.
